DMA PIANO RECITAL
( NOVEMBER 19TH / SCHOENBERG HALL/ 7 PM UCLA)
RECITAL PROGRAM NOTES
As with the Ottoman Empire itself, the music from this time is the result of an expanded exchange and interaction of cultures and geographical implications. My approach towards the interpretation and public offering of music stemming from and influenced by both Eastern and Western tradition is in efforts of showing the universality of the musical language. As the Ottoman Empire was the fruit of two very distinct identities portraying a mosaique of culture, geography and history, so was this reflected in Turkish classical music.
The program I have chosen for my recital at UCLA includes and focuses on a variety of sectors, feeding my desire as a developing artist to discover musical footprints of my ethnic background. Next to the well-known western composers such as Liszt and Beethoven, I will play Emile Robert Blanchet’s “Turquie”, which captures the mysticism of the Turkish culture. As a cultural balance to this, I am also including several eastern composers from different backgrounds such as Edgar Manas (1875-1964) , D. Tchouhadjian (1836-1898), Komitas, Halife (Caliph) Abdulmecid Efendi (1868-1944), Cemil Arif Bey and Ahmed Adnan Saygun (1907-1991).
My goal is to give examples of the cultural mosaics which constitute the Ottoman Empire of the past as well as offer Armenian artists the deserved acclaim and recognition for their talents. To show my intention of how musical culture carries through time a universal language, I commissioned Chilean composer, Luis Saglie to compose for my recital two concert arrangements for duduk and piano based on folk songs shared by both Turkey and Armenia – “Adana” and Bingol”.
I feel fortunate and remain grateful to the many international musicians who have so graciously committed their time and effort to perform with me this chosen repertoire. Among them are Movses Pogossian (violin), Anush Avetisyan (soprano), Ambroise Aubrun (violin), Jasmine Lau ( cello) ,Anna Sarkisova (piano) and Albert Vartavyan (Duduk).
I remain thankful for your support and would be extremely happy to have you present at my upcoming performance at Ucla on November 19 at 7:00PM.
Best wishes
