An Armenian gunman kills Turkish Consulate Secretary Mehmet Savas Yerguz as he is leaves his office. Swiss authorities apprehend Mardiros Jamgotchian. The Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA) proudly claims responsibility for the killing. Jamgotchian is convicted of murder and sentenced to 15 years. In a communiqué from Beirut, ASALA vows to “destroy Swiss interests throughout the world unless Jamgotchian is freed.” ASALA then forms a new branch, called the “Ninth of June Organization,” which undertakes a series of 12 attacks against Swiss targets worldwide. Jamgotchian’s sentence is reduced to 10 years.
